Organically improving search engine rankings with SEO

To improve search engine rankings for a website "organically" simply means obtaining a higher search engine ranking and appearing on the results page without paying the search engine for it. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) changes the website so that search engines see the site as being relevant to certain searches. SEO is a complex and time-consuming process partly because there are many competing engines which will give the same website different rankings. Also, SEO requires intimate knowledge of how the various search engines arrive at their rankings. Applying this knowledge, SEO alters the general structure of a site, adapts the content of the pages and develops off-site links to improve search engine rankings dramatically. Much time, effort and money has been wasted creating beautiful, well thought out websites which no one ever sees simply because SEO hasn't been employed and they don't rank well enough with search engines to be found by web users.

SEO: An exact science?

It might seem, then, that there exists some magical SEO formula which guarantees instant success in improving search engine rankings. While great improvements can be seen very quickly after SEO changes, SEO is not complete after the initial optimization. In order for SEO to have full effect, the website must be monitored and its traffic and rankings analyzed so that further tweaks can be performed and new content must be added. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, there is the secrecy that companies like Google and Yahoo! maintain around their methods. Search engines are a huge industry and major companies will do everything possible to insure that their ways of generating search engine rankings remain secret. SEO can not be an exact process without knowing exactly how search engines operate. Secondly, once you have improved search engine rankings for a site, new, optimized content must be added regularly as sites which don't update are penalised greatly by all search engines. All of this means that SEO is a continuous, labour intensive task and that, even for an experienced optimizer, to improve search engine rankings significantly using SEO is not a simple process.
